how exactly does one score "points" in this so-called "Cross-country" meet?

at the finish each runner's position equals the points they earned for that race. the best 5 positions from each team at the end of the race are added up to find each team's score. lower score wins.
person 1 gets 1 point, 2 gets 2 points...etc...
