Funny, that's just what I was thinking - it's not so much that they're worried about him being a loser, more that he sounds like someone setting up a bit of a cookhouse :)

I've had that vibe too! The thing is, I'm not willing to be dishonest with them (I'm well aware the other route would be fake landlord references etc which presumably is what the P lab guy would do) and whatever honest way I tell the story, it just sounds dodge.
