I saw the Michael Jackson movie "This Is It today. I'm not a Jackson fan so I wasn't going to see it, plus I think it's just a scheme to cash in on his death, but a friend had a spare ticket so I went simple to get out of the house. I was pleasantly surprised by it and wasn't bored at all. Growing up, by the time I was old enough to know who ( Read more... )

I've been thinking about seeing 'This is It' but I guess I've had the same exploitation reservations as you. I actually didn't/still don't really know a great deal about his private life but I freaking love his music.

Schindler's List is amazing. My dad's been teaching me Jewish history since I was a kid so I've always been aware of what they've been through (and continue to go through), including the holocaust... and I can't even imagine how horrific it must have been, but at the same time I think Spielberg did an amazing job of capturing some of that horror and giving us a glimpse of it. That part where you see the little girl in the red dress... and then see the red dress later broke my heart.

It doesn't show anything about his private life but inbetween the songs it shows how he tried to make things perfect and for me it showed him as an artist who cares a lot making his craft perfect and not the human headline I have known him as. If you're a fan of his music then you would probably enoy it more.

He was a genius to film it in b/w and then have that red dress to highlight the impact the little girl had on Schindler. It is just a snapshot of what happened but for me it makes the whole thing much more real.

(Congrats BTW about finishing your final exam and uni!! Very exciting! Party time!!)

Schindler's List has always stayed with me - it's one of those films that I have to prepare myself to re-watch, and usually do so alone. Kind of horrifically good. If you're into reading, the book - originally Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally, is fairly good too, but the way it's shown visually on screen actually make the film (for once) better, I think.

And I definitely need to go and see This Is It now.

I'm not sure that I could rewatch it. I'll definitly give the book a go but yeah I think the graphic nature of the film is part of makes it so powerful. You would have to be an amazing writer to get that same impact with just words.

"Growing up, by the time I was old enough to know who Jackson was, he had already become the "Freak show" that the last few years of his life were but this movie really humanised him for me and I can now see why he is called the "King of Pop" even if I don't enjoy his music."

I was...maybe 10 or 12 years old, when I heard about him-and I instantly became his fangirl. I watched his film "Moonwalker" and I watched it 2 more times after that.I liked him and his music, and I hated the way the press turned his life into late 90's.

We were pretty shielded as kids from a lot of music and celebrity gossip so I would have been in my early teens before I started knowing who he was, which was the early 00's. By that stage he was already well known for doing some pretty crazy things so that's what I've always know him for.
