*MASTERPOST*

It was cold outside but inside wasn’t any better. The office of the Dark Watch was quiet as most of the officers were outside, either working or at their homes. Matsumoto Jun was slowly walking through the corridors, lost in thoughts. He had just been called by his boss and that thought kind of scared him. The boss only called people to him if they were in deep shit or if they had done something extraordinary good. As Jun was quite sure the last one wasn’t the case he wondered what could have made his boss call him. Too soon for his liking he was in front of the door of the big office, his hand as steady as possible as he knocked on the door. After a few seconds he heard a soft ‘enter’ and he pushed the door open, bowing in front of the big desk where Takeo-sama was seated. His boss was a pretty imposing man. He wasn’t really tall, Jun thought he was taller, but he wasn’t sure as he had never seen the man standing close to him before. He wasn’t strongly built either, if you only gave him one quick glare he looked just like an average man but the complete opposite was true. If you looked at him a bit better and longer you could almost physically feel the immense aura that shone from him. You could immediately feel this was no man to mess with, not if your life was dear to you. A lot of stories were told about him, one even more unbelievable than the other. Some said he was a big boss from the underground yakuza, the biggest they had known in years before he joined the Watch. Others said he was the son of the Big Boss in Europe himself, transferred to Asia to keep watch. Jun didn’t know which of the stories he had to believe, for now he had just decided to keep his mistakes out of sight and his successes up front, just like everyone else was doing.

“Ah, Jun-kun. Come in, come in!” The tone of his boss was too friendly for his liking. His brain worked fast, trying to find any mistakes in the past few weeks that could put him into a dangerous situation. He hadn’t done anything wrong, hadn’t cause any cases to go wrong in any way, he was pretty sure of that.

“How are you doing? Do you like working here?”

“Great sir, I like working here very much. I learn something new every day, very interesting.”

“Excellent. How long have you been in the Watch now?”

“Two years sir.” He answered slowly. Matsumoto had absolutely no idea where this conversation was going. True, he had joined the Watch only two years ago, a bit late seeing his age, but they had let him through either way. He had just finished his training a few months ago and now he had been working on the field for a couple of months. Small, meaningless cases where he only assisted the officers on duty, but cases that needed to be solved in some way. He had to prove himself first before he would be set on bigger cases and before he could possibly work alone, everyone had to go through this path.

“I see. Time flies by doesn’t it? You have been on some cases then right? How is that going?”

“Great sir. No lost or unsolved cases so far.” He straightened his back a bit and couldn’t help the slight pride in his voice. He only assisted but on the last couple of cases he had played some part in getting it done.

“But you never went out alone right?” It felt like this man was reading his mind.

“No sir, only assisting jobs. I’m still a newbie after all.” His boss kept nodding and smiling which made Matsumoto even more uncertain of what was expected of him. Was it normal to have these conversations every once in a while? To see how he was doing? Or was it just him who was being treated like this? He had heard the rumors behind his back after all. Too soft, not fitted for this Watch. Some even dared to say he would fit the Light Watch much better with his way of working. Nobody seemed to understand what he was really doing. It was true he didn’t torture the people who broke the rules right away, he always tried to find better solution first. But in the Dark Watch it was normal to solve things with violence. It wasn’t like he did everything in a peaceful way, most certainly not, but he didn’t start hitting people when something could be solved with words. Maybe he was soft but it had worked out so far so no reason to blame him for that.

“Look, I won’t turn around it anymore. I have something that needs to be solved, an investigation that bothers me. You are the perfect person to do it for me. You can see it as a way to prove yourself that you are worth bigger cases than the ones you are working on right now.” Takeo-sama handed him a file, filled with information. Jun gave it a quick look before he turned back to his boss.

“Most certainly sir. But if I may be free to ask, why me?” The man in front of him smiled mischievously.

“Like I said, you are the perfect person to do it. See it as an improvement; you can work on this one alone. Well, almost alone, but you will understand when you read the file. You will be expected at the office of the Light Watch tomorrow morning. Make sure you are there on time, you will receive your instructions there.” The office of the Light Watch? Why would he need to go there? He didn’t understand a thing about this whole case he was entrusted on but he was afraid to ask more. The documents that had been handed to him would probably have the information he was looking for, he would read is as soon as he gets home. His boss made a gesture with his hand and Jun knew he wasn’t needed here anymore. Quickly he bowed and made his way to the door. Just when he opened it and wanted to leave he heard the voice of his boss again.

“Oh and Jun-kun, make sure you use the proper methods. I can’t deny you are doing a fine job but you are making us lose our hard face and we can’t afford that. Prove you are worth our time and your place in this Watch.” There it was, the treat Jun had been expecting since he had entered the office. So it was because of his way of working that he got this assignment. Prove yourself or you’re out. It wasn’t really said out loud but he got the hidden meaning behind those words.

“Of course sir, I won’t disappoint you.” His feet seemed to have gained weight as he dragged himself home. He wanted to prove himself so much, yet there was something that stopped him from using the hard way to get it. He knew he was too soft, he just needed to get used to this way of working a bit more.

“I guess I don’t have a choice right?” He softly said to himself while he was looking in the mirror. Suddenly feeling sleepy he decided to call it a day. He would take a look at the file tomorrow morning before he would go to the Light Watch. While he slipped inside his bed, he made a vow to himself. He would prove he was worth his place and the trust of the Dark Watch in this investigation, no matter what it would be about or who he would encounter.
