I consider Rotten Tomatoes to be a pretty decent indicator of a movie's worth - the wisdom of crowds and all - but I believe they got it way wrong with Hancock's paltry 37%.

Hancock is a good movie. Not perfect, but good. Definitely worth seeing.

I haven't seen it but want to... I can't explain it but my "gut feeling" is that I'd enjoy it despite the press. I'm glad to see someone confirming my hunch. :)

I expect that the reason it's gotten such a low rating would be that the reviewers there were expecting either just a light fluffy comedy, or a traditional superhero thing, and Hancock was neither.

I've loved all the superhero stuff we've gotten so far this year, but in the end, Hancock managed to be more heroic than any of his competitors. I loved the movie, and need to pick up the soundtrack when I get the chance.

That's a very interesting take. Not being black, I am less sensitive to some of the more subtle racial issues at play, and I bow respectfully towards those who are moreso.

I have no doubt that Hancock could have been a better movie, had certain things (like the truncated kiss) been handled slightly differently. I don't think the current racial treatment was bad enough to kill the movie, even so.

Major plot and character changes for the sake of subverting racial stereotype, however, would have made it a completely *different* movie -- maybe also a good one, but not the same story. And I do think there is value in *this* story, even with its flaws.

Personally... I really liked Hancock. Of course I'm sure there'll be the inevitable porno version called "Handcock" or something like that.

Anyway, would say more but I don't want to give spoilers away. I read the review by Steve Barnes, and not being black I'll admit I can't see from that point of view. I disagree with his assessment though... but again can't really say why cause of spoilers you know

Oh by the way, I used to read your blog a long, long time ago before LiveJournal and before. Well, all of this. Karawynn, you won't remember me, I'm sure (was there even commenting back then?), but how's that writing thing turning out? ;)

Hi there. Rather than try to answer 'that writing thing' in a comment, I'll post an entry soon. :)
