Well. I think it's just in basic human nature to wonder about what we don't know, what we don't understand. Right? So I guess that would kind of explain why we're over in FOREIGN countries, asking them the why's and how's and what have you's. Here's a good question for you though, is it better we stay in ignorance rather than to try and understand these things??? A good way to find out about things (or people, in this case) is to ask.

very true-ignorance is the key to most of the world's issues. However, as humans, we tend to approach the unkown with less of an open mind than needed, and a tendency toward judgement. I guess my standpoint is simply that yes, we should ask the questions, but HOW we ask them is the key. Foreign ideas and cultures should be approached with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
that's where i stand...and a little background on this post: i thought it would provoke some sort of discussion, so I threw it up. that, and in the month i've had here, I've noticed a tendency toward, "THEY DO WHAT?! THATS SO WEIRD. WHY WOULD ANY PEOPLE DO THAT? WHY WOULD THEY EAT THAT? WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!" sooo it got me thinking.
I guess I just don't understand how you can approach someone with the intent of finding out more about that person or their culture with a closed-mind. It's kind of defeating the whole point of being close-minded by asking in the first place.
Interesting. My first impression of Madison was that everyone basically rearranged their lives in order to appear accepting of every single variation of people and lifestyles. I mean, Madison IS an unfathomably huge liberal university. I guess impressions really just stem from your background.
I agree, but it does happen. People approach new things, and after asking say, "why the hell would they do that?!" or "GROSS what are they eating!" or "ew, thats so disgusting, why do they dress/act/look like that" that's what i'm talking about with the close-minded attitude.
I agree about impressions-I hear a lot of close-minded talk...most recently concerning National Coming Out Week. mmmm who knows, and yeah, Madison is extremely liberal! what are you doing here??? hahaha just kidding whit, give me a call sometime to meet up! (starting friday anyway, once i get my phone)
