The soil in my new yard is acidic (5.4).  This is the range of 'strongly acidic'.  I can tell this from both the test results and from which plants are thriving unattended - mountain laurels and rhododendrons.  I like some plants which prefer acid soil, but many plants which prefer neutral to alkaline (hellebores, peonies, sage, lilac, species ( Read more... )

My inclination would be to leave one or two acidic beds (i.e. around the mountain laurels) and to work on reducing the acidity in the rest of the garden.

Ooh, you could grow blueberries and wintergreen and... other tasty things I don't remember that like soil like that! (Ah, modulo the lead.) Beyond that, though, strongly acidic narrows your planting options pretty strongly, is my impression, so if I were going to need to rehabilitate the soil anyway, I'd probably lime it as I go in at least a couple beds.
