I have not usually had this problem, but I can see why there could be a big divide between confidence in public speaking and hesitance in writing online. Speech is more forgiving because it is unrecorded. Mispronunciations, misstatements, even stupid or mean remarks have a harder time following you as only those who were there as you were speaking have direct access to your words, and even they will lose them quickly as time and faulty human memory make it harder to remember what it was that you did that they thought was wrong

I always feel as though posting something on livejournal or facebook will be met with indifference by the general population but then I'm (always) pleasantly surprised when people comment.
That said, I've only posted to forums where the main audience was people I knew and cared about. I have yet to take that final leap into the vase unknown but I think it's because I see my life as really none of any stranger's business.
I also agree with greensword's comment above. write for yourself first; an audience will follow.
