McDermott's, which was in the same place as Tropic Jewelry. I think they may have gone last year. Bookworks closed sometime this year - they're still in the phone book. He did good business, but I know he was more interested in the rare book side of thing. I met him a couple of times at Booked for Murder. Bookworks was just a block down from the Capital.

Moore Books (which had a different name before it closed) moved it's stock back to Avols. The Moore's bought the Avols out a few years ago, and kept both stores going. Avols is now in the Canterbury Bookstore place and the building they were in was bought biuy a developer who wants to put up yet another highrise.

Shakespeare's Books is still on the Square. 20th Centur Books and Pic-a-book have been gone for a few years - victims of rent. 20th Century moved away from the Square and struggled on for a while, but it's gone now. Paul's Books is still at the campus end of State Street.

The Puzzle Box closed a year ago. I didn't spend much time downtown last fall at all - half the streets were torn up through the end of November which made getting around difficult - and of course, more road construction and Overture construction this year! Although they did finish all the road stuff downtown this month.

My niece, former downtown resident, said there's a similar shop now open between Gorham and Johnson. I may make it down this weekend to check it out.
