Fandom/Pairing: Left 4 Dead 2 [Nick/Ellis]
1. I’ve Got a Feeling [Black Eyed Peas]
Before the fucking apocalypse the worst thing Nick had ever considered to be truly terrible in their day and age, in a more or less wide spread way, was the rising popularity of the Black Eyed Peas.
I was just his luck that the kid was a fan; or at least in tune with their sickening cheerful message. “I gotta feelin’ that tonights gunna be a good night.” Ellis sang to himself as he chopped off another zombie’s head. Nick tried to ignore him, but it just got worse with every word that left his lips. “…go out and smash it, like oh my God…” There must have been irony in the lyrics- there was definitely some smashing going on but he wasn’t sure it was what the singers had originally intended.
“Ellis can you do me a favor and just shut the fuck up?” Nick finally growled, not wanting to listen to another word that was coming from his companion. Tonight was not going to be a good night it was, in fact, going to be another night in this hell where they may or may not be alive to reach the morning. Fucking optimists.
There was a blissful few seconds of silence before…
“…and I’m feelin’ that tonights gunna be a good, good night.” The mirth behind the words didn’t slip past the conman.
2. [If You’re Wondering if I Want You To] I Want You To [Weezer]
Ellis had decided many days ago that Nick was confusing. Which, coincidently, Nick had come to the same conclusion about Ellis.
Ellis tried to figure out the older man, him with his calm collected self and the fact he grumbled about some illusive ex-wife and the fact he wad rich. He tried to soften him up, open up- so far it hadn’t exactly worked. He had even hoped, in a morbid moment, that a few close calls with the zombies might make him talk. Not really.
Nick, however, was just as bewildered with the southern hick. He talked about his friends and told a plethora of stupid and annoying stories. Thing was he never said a thing about himself. It was always Keith. He had, at one point, demised that Keith was really him and he just wasn’t saying. The theory fell apart, however, on that night.
The night was when Ellis had broken down in his arms, admitting he was worried about his friends from home. He cried and clung to the conman who simply wrapped his arms around the kid.
Even if they were both confusing, they were still human and that made all the difference in the world.
3. The Mixed Tape [Jack’s Mannequin]
Ellis stared out at the land he didn’t know. He had never been out of Savannah and now he had been forced on the other side of the country. The clean side of the country, or at least that was the claim. So he settled down and opened himself a shop that was doing pretty well. He had made a whole lot of friends here… even if it felt wrong to him.
He sat in the early morning rays of light coming over the horizon with only one thing on his mind. Nick. The conman, with his ruined $3,000 suit, had run off the moment they got evacuated. The last words that they had exchanged weren’t words- and he felt like it was his fault that he had left. If he could just have found the courage to say “stay” he might be there.
“Where are ya now?” He asked out loud, not expecting an answer from the happily chirping birds that greeted the day.
4. Decipher Reflections from Reality [PlayRadioPlay!]
After they got away from it all, the killing and insanity, he knew that he would never be the same. First and foremost he had actually put trust into people to have his back- now he wasn’t sure if he could live without them around. But right now he was sitting in the middle of the evac-camp trying to figure it all out.
“Oh shit! I’m gunna have a big burger first thing- ya know? Real food. Ain’t like my pa makes, sure of it, but I’m gunna find it and it is going to be the best damn thing!” He didn’t need to look up to know it was Ellis coming over to him. Rochelle was next to him, laughing at how energetic he was. Still telling his stories and making wild claims about what he was going to do when they finally got the go ahead. “What ‘bout you Nick? Any first you’re gunna do?”
He could feel their eyes on him, expectant. He stood up from the cot he was sitting on and finally brought his eyes up to lock with Ellis’. “Yeah kid, a definite first.” He smirked and quickly strode over to him, connecting their lips. He laughed at the definite squeak he heard coming from the younger man and the muttered ‘I knew it’ from Ro.
He was going to let himself love again; that was the first thing that was going to happen.
5. Seasons of Love [RENT Soundtrack]
Ellis had an odd way of time-lining things in his head. It wasn’t by date, mostly because he got the different times confused so often. No when he was kid the way he knew what went where is by using phrases such as “Oh yeah that was the same time Keith broke him arm when the pit bull bit ‘em!” and even if no one else knew when exactly when that was- it worked for him.
So he chronicled his life by his friend’s happiness and mishaps; it was one of the reasons he remembered everything that happened to them. He never used himself as a place marker, so he never told stories about himself.
These days, though, the friends had changed and there was a certain someone that came up more often then not in his place marking.
“Oh goodness,” Rochelle groused, trying to remember something as she had lunch with him that day, “what year did that even happen? I know I should know, it was my surgery after all...”
“Same year Nick and I got engaged, darlin’. I ‘member that ‘cause you cried with happiness and the nurse came yellin’ at me due to me getting you all riled up and shit.” A smile spread across his lips at the memory.
