"...the joys of opening D&D stuff".

Oh yes.

I recommend eBay as an excellent source of RPG material, although after a few months you might need to start considering storage...

Goodness! I think I'm pretty much done for the moment and it all fits into a large blue box...

I played 'Hero Quest' last weekend with a couple of school friends + wife and daughter of one of them. I didn't notice it when it was first out (1989) but it was rather good! It's not quite 'proper' roleplaying being a series of dungeon bashes, with instead of a DM, an 'Evil Wizard' player whose job is to try and kill the party (that was me!) .. but has good game mechanics including decent spells for the mage, even when starting out - that was a serious problem with original Basic D&D!! - nicely designed 'furniture' for laying out the dungeons, and tailored dice with skulls for 'hits' and shields for 'parries'.

We issued my friend's wife with a mini figure, stats, and outlined the rules without demur but when we handed out the basic character sheets she said 'Hang on a minute - this is roleplaying!' in a tone of outrage!!

I like the sound of the Starter Set, would be interested to try that with mine some time.

Hero Quest does sound fun; interesting how sniffy some people get about the idea of RPGs ( ... )
