January 27th, 1983

When I said that I was looking forward to see what 1983 had in store, this wasn't what I meant.

I can't believe it. If I hadn't been watching the trial myself I might be a little wary, but-

Doesn't anything we do these days have any sort of bearing? Is there even a point to arresting people anymore if they're all going to plead Imperius and get off scot free? What's the point of even having trials in the first place anymore, if they're all turning out the bloody same? There are guilty people just walking away and laughing at us.

I'm not saying all of the cases turn out this way, but an awful lot of them lately have and the whole system just feels like a bit of a farce. I'm just glad a lot of my cases lately haven't involved murder and have been relatively easy to follow through on (though I fully expect people to start claiming Imperius as to why they were caught trying to foist cursed objects any day, now), so I feel like there is some use to the MLE right now. It's days like today that make me wonder if I should have taken the department up on the offer to leave-

I can't possibly imagine what I'd be feeling right now if I had actually been on the Macnair case if I'm feeling this helpless just as a colleague and observer.

After my overnight ends, I'm going to go home and go to bed. I'm going to stay there, and pray to whatever god is still hanging around up there that Solon doesn't have to work today because I really need to know that there is still something good left on this earth. And maybe later on I'll have a few drinks.

God damn it.

Well. That was that.

Overnights all this week might be good for me.
