Guess What? We're Pregnant!

Canon, and not fluffy.

Her story

“Two months along, Miss Newsome,” the doctor said, looking a bit disapproving. Well, what did he know, anyway?

She’d driven to an ob/gyn office two towns away from Childress. Her daddy played golf with all the doctors in town, and she didn’t intend him to find out until she was damn good and ready to tell him.

But first she’d have to tell Jack that a little stranger was on the way.

She’d been pretty sure she was pregnant before she saw the doctor. The morning sickness gave her a fairly good clue, and up until she’d met Jack her periods had been real regular.

Jack wasn’t her first, of course. Being on the barrel riding circuit gave her lots of freedom, and she’d taken advantage of it. Her momma called her a wild child, but her daddy had always liked the fearless streak in her. Being an only child, she reckoned her daddy had given her some of the leeway he might have given a son.

Somehow she doubted that leeway would extend to sex, though.

Well, a baby would mean the end of her wild days. Time to settle down.

She hoped Jack would take it well. They’d tried to use rubbers, but sometimes they just got too excited and get careless. But she loved Jack, with his easy smile and his eagerness to please. They’d had a lot of fun, and he hadn’t actually mentioned marriage, but it was still early in their relationship. She was sure he would do the right thing.

For all his cheerfulness, there was a streak of loneliness in Jack, and she hoped that a baby and a house and a job with her daddy’s company would ease that.

The one time her daddy had met Jack, he hadn’t liked him. Said she could do better.

But Daddy would come around to what Lureen wanted. He always did.

His story

He knew he should have been more careful about the rubbers.

But Lureen was always so eager, and he’d always been so hot to have her that he thought with his little brain instead of his big one.

The sex was great. Well, maybe not great, it wasn’t what Jack was used to, what he really wanted. He liked a man’s strong muscles, and he liked the feeling of being filled up, as well as the feeling of sliding into the hottest place in a body. Hotter than Lureen’s insides, and tighter.

Lureen was all soft curves and creamy breasts, good in a different way, and from that first time she’d rode him in the back of that borrowed car he’d known how it was going to be between them.

The sex made him feel normal, and it was a nice change from rolling his own. And it made him miss Ennis less, at least while he was doin’ it. The times afterward, when Lureen wanted to cuddle, sometimes then he’d think about Ennis, which was funny when you thought about it.

Ennis sure hadn't been a cuddler.

He and Lureen had been having a lot of fun over the last few months. Jack was winning a few prizes for bull riding, so he was feeling a bit more flush. And Lureen always seemed to have enough spending money for a good meal or night at a decent motel.

It had crossed his mind that Lureen had been careless on purpose, hoping to trap him into marriage. But he pushed that thought away as unkind. She’d certainly seemed contrite when she came to him, crying a little as she explained, “I got in trouble.”

But he knew that she hadn’t gotten into trouble on her own, and that he had to step up and take responsibility. Be a man, like his own daddy had always told him.

He knew that L.D. Newsome didn’t like him, the man had made that plenty clear at their first, awkward meeting.

L.D. had looked at him like he knew Jack was banging his daughter and wasn’t the least bit happy about it.

But he figured the baby would make him come around. And Lureen said her momma would be thrilled to have a grandchild.

It wasn’t the life he’d hoped for, that was for sure. He’d always had a dream in the back of his mind that someday he and Ennis could ranch up together, have a little cow and calf operation.

But Ennis was married by now.

With a baby on the way, it was time for Jack to do the same.
