Guys, how do you find fic on AO3? Both you personally and other methods you are aware of ( Read more... )

Oooh, go you! \o/

A few thoughts - one is, yeah, people actually subscribe to tags on AO3 I think? So, say, kirk/spock.

Another is twitter. Did you check there? Because though I'm not on there very much, I do know a lot of the chatter about new fics happens there, plus of course tumblr.

Finally, I wonder too about pinboard and delicious and even anon memes like ffa or your fandom's anon meme if there is one. I do tend to follow the tags I subscribe to on pinboard and if I notice three people in a row bookmarking a new fic, I will check it out. I sometimes if I think of it will check AO3 bookmarks in a kind of similar way.

hah, I understand even less about twitter than I do tumblr. I don't use it at all. I do see comments here and there about using it for fannish purposes - which boggles me.

Huh. I do use AO3 the way you're describing with pinboard but have never used pinboard. Interesting. After 10 years of clinging to LJ (and I never use any social media in my real life - I don't even have FB), I'm so naive about the Ways of the World. *g*

I stalk authors and their bookmark lists. And then if I'm just looking for something more generally I go with tags that I'm interested and sort by hits. I'm pretty lazy actually with the whole seeking fic out and even worse with feedback/recs these days, though (whoops!).

Also your fic (fabulous by the way!) from what I can see hits pretty much most of TW fandom buttons and I think a few of the tumblr recs I've seen are by people/tumblrs that have a lot of followers. So perhaps that explains the large number of hits?TW goes pretty crazy with the reccing and the crossover between AO3 and tumblr or so I've noticed.

(I don't know how tumblr works either)

See, you do what I do. I love bookmarks - I think it's a better feel than kudos, though looking at kudos can at least give you an idea.

Thanks, dear! The fic was totally like catnip for fans, even though I didn't set out to write a fic for that purpose. I love that TW recs - through tumblr mostly, yes, but the fact that the fandom recs. I haven't been in a good reccing culture since HP, and I miss it - have bemoaned it here, in fact, I think.

Tumblr does get easier! I'm starting to like it.

I subscribe to writers who've written stuff I like; occasionally I subscribe to specific series or stories in progress if they're by a writer who writes tons of stuff in fandoms I don't follow (or I'm just really only into a particular story/series).

For small fandoms or rare pairs, I'll periodically do a search to see if anything new has shown up.

For more popular stuff, I'll search sometimes too, but I tend to then get more specific (complete only; sometimes searching based on tags or kudos or comments or length or any number of things).

Occasionally I search on tags regardless of fandom.

That does seem like a ton of hits, but it's a very popular fandom as I understand it.

I just did some quick searches and I found your latest story linked:

- With at least 25 bookmarks on Pinboard

- On a list of the 100 most popular bookmarks on Pinboard

- And because of the pinboard popularity, it's on Freshnews.org.

- When it was popular on Pinboard, may have made it onto PopUrls or at least Google sent me there as if maybe it had been at ( ... )

oh my god, you're amazing. I didn't even know about half of these things. Actually, it kind of freaks me out how fandom crosses so much into social media. I mean, I suppose LJ is a primitive form of social media, but it never felt that way and never caught on as such.

I do the same thing with subscribing. I really like it as a system.

The hockey fandom is not particularly huge, so I just click on the fandom tag a few times a day and keep an eye on what's new/at the top. As long as I'm not out of town or anything, I can keep up pretty easily.

I also use pairing or kink tags if I'm in the mood for something in particular. Typically I'll sort by kudos so I can get the better stuff at the top.

Incidentally, some Teen Wolf/hockey crossover has jumped into the lead in kudos ahead of everything else in the fandom, I assume on the strength of the much bigger TW fandom, LOL.

Hah, that's funny. About the crossovers - yeah, TW is a crazy active fandom at the moment. The energy is great. That's how I got sucked into tumblr, which I really disliked but now that I'm getting used to it, I'm starting to really like it. I do get a fair amount of hockey fic in my inbox because a lot of the writers I subscribe to for TW also write hockey fic.

Tags. Well, tags and recs from friends is what I do. Usually I pick a pairing (hello Charles/Erik) or a character (Loki!) and browse through the fics for that tag like poshlil does. Depending on my mood, I'd open every fic that has a description that interests me or every fic that has a certain hit/kudos ratio. Sometimes it takes 12-20 pages to get to the last fic I was reading, sometimes less. I also have a bookmarks folder for WiP that makes it easy to find fics I'm following and manually check in on my favourite authors sometimes.

Is this your first time writing Teen Wolf? It's a fandom that gets a lot of traffic and it's one of the biggest fandoms on AO3; I'm not surprised by the hit count.

(I think it should be much higher, to be quite honest! ;P)

((I need to rec it somewhere. I'd quit Teen Wolf and coffeehouse AUs, look at what you did!)

I owe you comments, doll! I'm still catching up on life after a weekend away. *wry* I used to bookmark a lot, but AO3 removed that need with subscriptions. I love them a whole lot - never have to think about checking, just wait for notifications. Browsing by tag only works, I think, if it's a small fandom or rarepair. In TW, it would be too overwhelming. Unless it's a selective tag as well ( ... )
