If you can track down a copy, I would suggest Castle Falkenstein (by R Talsorian Games). The setting is pretty much everything you want, only replace 'wenching' with 'courting', and 'alchymickal discoveries' with 'Victorian age steampunk'

actually, no, that's an awesome idea. The royal society analog at the museum/university brings back a caged dinosaur from a far-off jungle which inevitably breaks loose and unleashes hell and it's down to the player characters to stop it.

Or a steampunk robot built around an old tyrannosaurus fossil breaks loose from the Great Exposition and unleashes hell and it's down to the player characters to stop it.

That way you also get robots, which are also awesome.
