Harsh Realities...

An acquaintance of mine is a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya, and I just got the following message from her parents...

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year. Michael & I just got off the phone with Katie and she asked us to send an email out to all of you to let you know that she is safe, staying in the home of a Kalinjen family in Kapkatet and staying out of sight.

I'm not sure how much, if anything, you all have seen about the presidential election in Kenya and the resulting unrest. Basically, on the 27th they had the election and until Sunday, the opposition party was winning. On Sunday evening Kenya time, they announced that the incumbent had won and had already been sworn in. Since then rioting has been going on pretty much country wide. The government has banned live broadcasts originating in Kenya so Katie is depending on the BBC to hear what is happening. We are trying to stay updated through CNN online and other such sites.

We bitch and moan about our government all the time, but at least there isn't this type of corruption and manipulation going on. At least we don't have to be afraid of going out into the streets after an election. It makes you think.

I recently got done reading A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. I consider it a must-read, because we take so much for granted here. If you're interested, I'll let you borrow my copy as soon as my family finishes with it.
