I was watching a thing on the Science Channel earlier about how we would deal with visitation by a hypothetical alien species whilst reading up on the situation in Boston, including all of the fabulously racist anti-Islam crap and all about how the terrorists are out to get us and all Muslims can't be trusted and need to be deported immediately

I know what happens when two civilizations, one more technologically advanced than the other, meet. The outcome is never pretty. It might be different with aliens, but I doubt it.

This quest for intelligent life... Why do people bother?

I think we would do better to look at the Cetaceans. If one compares how they treat one another to the way we apes treat each other, they seem to be the smart -- or at least tolerant -- ones.
