ILLUSIONS

My Mom tells a story about being too discontent one miserably hot Minnesota summer day.*

*You might think it can’t get that hot in Minnesota, but you’d be surprised.  I come from Florida, where temps can get up to around 100 - 102°F in the blistering summers, but regularly hover between 97° - 99°F.  In over 30 years, I’ve seen the dog ( Read more... )

I'm an agnostic, so I understand a lot of where you're coming from.

Because of that, much of religion is more of a philosophy to me, and some people's view of "Man creates God in his own image" seems far truer than the reverse.

The Old Testament god is a different god from the New Testament god, which is where much of the contradiction in Christianity comes from. The Old Testament is a fear-based religion, like most of those preceding it and concurrent with its history. The New Testament was a revolutionary concept by comparison, and the message of "love one another" is still revolutionary to far too many people who think of themselves as Christian!

I agree with banana_galaxy that most abusers seek to be treated as if they are your god. I hadn't thought of the reverse as you presented it here, and it does make me think of the "fear-based" OT approach ( ... )

You are incredibly thoughtful. I admire your ability to swim in the murky depths with curiosity and vulnerability.

Thank you. That curiosity and vulnerability hasn't always served me in life... for a while, my questioning separated me from my family, but eventually they grew enough as people to no longer take responsibility for my salvation, and just love me anyway. I've never been one for offering up mindless positional respect... respect has to be earned.
