Most of the Inferno is also a political commentary. There was a lot of turmoil around the time Dante wrote it, and he was exiled for a while and accused of treason (if I remember correctly), yet he believed that other people were the treasonous parties, which is why the deepest level of hell is reserved for traitors. It's like declaring his innocence and bashing his opponents at the same time. And a lot of the characters were political figures of the day. I only know all this because I read an excellent translation with lots of footnotes. It's a good read, but there are a lot of different translations out there, so the trick is to find a good one.

Limbo actually sounded like a pretty cool place, considering the alternatives. All the really smart people go there and sit around for eternity discussing things and feeling melancholy. Totally my kind of place, LOL.
