Thoughts on Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright - Trials and Tribulations~

Apr 19, 2011 22:19

Look at all my trials and tribulatioooons, sinking in a gentle pool of wiiiine~...
Okay, where to start.

Although there's lots of stuff that bothered or annoyed me, I quite enjoyed the game. Not as much as Apollo Justice, but I think it's hardly possible for me to ever again love a game as much as this one.
I got to know and love characters like Mia aka The Awesomeness, Franzi, Edgeworth, Pearl, and last but not least: Lawyer!Phoenix! 8D
I still don't really like Maya, but I don't dislike her, either. She's just... there.

While I didn't care much about little Pearl either, I started to like her throughout the last case, since she really is an endearing girl who's pretty strong and clever for a 9 years old.
Edgeworth is adorable. But he really got on my nerves a bit after the earthquake. I found his emo-ing ridiculously cute, but at some point... I dunno, I think it was when he told Phoenix his ex-girlfriend got executed and then continued BAWWWING about some completely unrelated case that was even more of a nightmare than everything before... yeah, I felt like bitchslapping him. Still, he's such a ridiculous man, how can I not like him?

Franziska actually is quite awesome. I love how she's so totally bitchy towards men and keeps beating them up at every occasion, but how she's always so kind and nice towards girls and women. Okay, as kind and nice as a Franziska von Karma can be, but she's definitely softening up a bit around women, and that is really endearing.
Also: Anybody telling me Hobo!Phoe-Phoe is completely ooc and his sarcasm came out of nowhere... did we play the same game...? XD

HOWEVER, what this entry is mainly about to be about is *drumroll* Godot *ba-damm-dish*.
I really don't want to offend anybody, so here's my warning: I like him. I like him a lot and I find him somehow cute. But my opinion of him is really low. I think of him as a gigantic loser. So if you love Godot, maybe you should stop reading here, cuz I don't want to bash anybody. It's just my opinion on him as a man. And as I said, I'm not going to cut him a lot of slack.

It really took me a while to get to know him at all. First, all I could think of when I saw him was his creepy theme music that totally sounds like soft porno soundtrack to me XD However, I was waiting for his interaction with Mia, for I had been told that Diego and Mia had the most awesome chemistry ever. The flashback case came. And I was SO disappointed about both Diego and Mia. I'm so glad Mia redeemed herself later on, but how she was always stammering his name like a moe-moe-schoolgirl just made me go wtf. The best part was though... Diego's openly displayed sexism towards every girl in court, though how he was behaving towards Mia shocked me the most.

I'm usually not that kind of girl who's all like “OMG NOES SEXISM!” over everything. I mean, helllooo, I ship Divine/Aki, a pairing all about a man completely controlling a girl that's obsessed with him and doesn't want to live in a world where he isn't there for her.
But somehow I always thought Diego's and Mia's relationship would be one of respect on both sides. But neither did Diego seem to really respect Mia as equivalent at all, nor did she give him much reason to during that case :/

Next up was how he was talking to Franziska. Again, I'm not a person who's a total feminist and gets all worked up about every tiny bit of jokes about women. But the stuff he told Franzi kept me speechless for about five minutes. It was such utter sexism, I couldn't believe anybody could like this man! He was SUCH a condescending jerk! From the fandom's depiction of him, I expected him to be a very charming, charismatic guy who can be a bit full of himself and is a little macho now and then, but all in all a lovable guy. Man was I wrong.
Well, everyone told me I should wait for the last case, since he would redeem himself a lot there.

So I did. And after the case I gotta admit, I didn't think of him as a condescending jerk anymore. I'm thinking of him as a pathetic, obsessed loser who didn't get over his own disgusting sexism.

Everything he did was out of pure egomania and thickheadedness. Oh, and let's not forget the sheer idiocy.
Okay, let's start at the start. Even though Dahlia got away with it back then in Terry Fawles' case, Diego effin KNEW she was a poisoner. Still he sat down for a little chat with her in the courthouse cafeteria. And drank coffee. Obviously without paying much attention to it. I think so much stupidity deserves punishment. And that he got, big time.
First time he was owned by Dahlia Hawthorne, a girl that usually fails at executing her plans correctly.

So he falls into coma.
During the time he was comatose, guess who kicked Dahlia's ass into the next dimension? It was Mia. The whole thing with Terry Fawles really got to her, and she wanted to nail down the woman responsible for it once and for all. Of course the poisoning of Diego was another reason. But first and foremost... Mia did this for herself. And thus, Mia aka The Awesomeness was born.

So, Mia is an independent woman who's kickin ass, doesn't need anybody's help and has taken a cute little protégé under her wing.
And Diego awakes from his coma, just to learn that the woman he thought he had to protect (after all, she's just a weak woman and he is a strong, strong man) had solved the whole case on her own. Oh, and died.
And although HE wanted to protect her so badly, instead of blaming himself, he made poor little Phoenix responsible for everything, since he was the only MAN in her near vicinity at that time, and after all, it's always the MEN protecting the weak and inferior women.

So he took on the mysterious identity of Batman Godot, getting back at... everyone he held responsible for his own failure, running from all the facts he couldn't cope with, because he was too immature (i.e. Mia is dead, he coulda/shoulda/woulda/didn'ta protect her, she solved the case he wanted to solve for her, and she didn't need him in any way or form).

And thus starts the epic chain of fail that was Godot's life from here on. Instead of getting revenge on Phoenix, he lost every damn case against him.

Oh, and let's not forget about his AWESOME plan to protect Maya. Because she's Mia's sister. U-hu.
Let's put it this way... the whole plan was complete and utter bs. Everything. Every-thing. E-VERY-THING. Every little thing that happened during the last chapter could have been avoided. If Godot only had talked to Pearl. You know, instead of trying to pull off a cool superhero-plan which would have resulted in him saving the damsel in distress. Yeeeah.
He even MENTIONED he knew the whole thing could have been avoided if he had talked to the person that was most involved (to which Maya replied with “Is he talking about Nick?” No, you dumbass, it's your poor little cousin!!).

Okay, so the greatest fail in his plan was that it shouldn't even have existed in the first place. But now to the plan itself.
He managed to contact Maya's mother (who had disappeared 17 years ago!!) … (!!!), and Iris (of whom nobody knew she was even related to Maya!) and ALL they could come up with was the following:

Misty tries to lure Pearl into her room with children's books, so that she will not be able to channel Dahlia :D :D :D :D
...Oh noes, Pearl didn't show up! D: D: D: D: What do we do nao?

...Srsly u guys.
So Misty channels Dahlia. Giving her an extra weapon and a stronger body (I have no idea if the strength of the body really does matter, but DAMN Misty had a SWORD!!). And Godot just hangs out in front of the inner temple, hoping he'll be able to somehow protect Maya.
So Maya's in the garden. And Dahlia approaches her, willing to murder her.
Enter Godot aka the most retarded dumbass this universe has ever seen.
Just to make this clear: Godot KNOWS that girl threatening Maya may look like Dahlia, but is actually either Pearl or some other medium. And he knows Dahlia is dead, so she can't be killed again. And instead of knocking her out... he stabs her in the back. Because he... hates... Dahlia.
WAT.

Okay, so he supposedly stabbed a 9 years old innocent girl in the back because he gets TEH RAEG when he sees the back of Dahlia's head.
But Dahlia's medium isn't dead yet. So despite of her fatal wound, Dahlia, a fragile young girl in the body of an old woman, turns around and hits his mask off his face. And cuts his face.
Wow Godot. What a guy.
So now Godot has a nice scar in his face that says “I got owned by Dahlia Hawthorne. Twice.” (Oh, let me just mention here that Mia told Dahlia that she will never ever succeed, especially not against her. Ahaha... classic.)

So Godot DID save Maya (YAAY ^^°), but killed her mother in the process, and would have killed Pearl if it hadn't been for her aunt. Just to remember y'all: ALL of this could have been avoided. If Godot chose the less action packed way to save Maya and just TALKED to Pearl.
With killing Dahlia's medium, he gave her the opportunity to search for a new one. So the sacrifice of Misty Fey was actually completely in vain.
At this point I just want to say THANK. YOU. MIA. For owning a brain and being the first one to actually help Maya that night. She was the one who told Maya to channel Dahlia herself, and that was what finally saved Maya.

So again it was Mia who saved the day and defeated Dahlia. While all Godot managed to do was causing unnecessary bloodshed.
He killed Misty and would have killed Pearl. And he said he probably didn't want to save Maya for the sake of... you know... saving her, but just because of his hurt pride. Which is why he made such an enormous fuzz about it in the first place.
Why Maya stood up for him, I will never ever ever ever understand.

And then, when Dahlia was in court, he didn't manage to solve the case AGAIN. The one who kicked Dahlia's butt once more was Mia.
So we finally get to Godot's big redeeming moment everyone was talking about. Just that it was no redeeming moment, but him counting all the times he failed at life and bawwing about it a bit while getting his little head patted by Maya. Oh, and Phoenix, which I don't understand as well.
The one who didn't grant him absolution was Mia, who approved of Godot getting his ass kicked finally being taught a lesson.

It was there and then when Godot finally realized that it is Phoenix who is carrying on Mia's spirit without lingering in the past and mourning over things that happened and can't be undone, who got over it and is now continuing Mia's work, just like she would have wanted it. (That moment was so epic omg I almost cried when Mia and Phoenix were so f00k awesome and Mia is with Phoenix and lives in him and  ;O;°°°°)

Diego probably really loved Mia, I give him that. She really meant a lot to him. But what he couldn't understand is that she didn't need him. At all. And obviously because he couldn't get over this, Mia's potential interest in him faded, she got over him. He just didn't get that there could be a woman who does not need the help of a man, that Mia could do things on her own, without the help of Diego Armando. I remember when he described how Mia moved him during the Fawles case, how he described her “sweet and innocent” heart. It made me sick, really. And somehow I've got a feeling Mia'd be with me here.

So Godot in a nutshell was a guy who, convinced that Mia would definitely need him by her side since she's such a fragile little flower, became completely dependent on her, just couldn't cope with that and started obsessing about his idea of her and his hurt pride - and in the process failed a lot at life while ruining the lives of others.

Now I know people say he's such a touching character because he is full of flaws.
But to me, he was just too undiscerning and immature to just get over with it.

Oh, oh! Don't forget! I still like him! All this doesn't mean I dislike him! It's just that as a man, I think he's a joke. Imho his character is totally overrated by the fandom, and I will never get why.

Again, I don't want to offend anybody here.
This is just ma little opinion ;]
