I made a picspam with my commentary of the scene. You know. THE scene. Hope you enjoy the pretty caps, if not my comments. Image heavy.
So first, big meaty jock bullies small gay kid. Ok, this is to be expected, he's already slammed Kurt into the lockers a few times before. But he looks back. I am of the opinion that he may have used this simply as an excuse to stare at Kurt for a few seconds.
"I am talking to you!"
"Girl's locker room is next door."
"What is your problem?"
So, this is a little different. Kurt follows Karofsky, yelling his head off. Perfectly justified, of course, but more out of the norm. I imagine Karofsky is a bit surprised and probably a bit scared that his secret love (I SHIP IT NOW, I CAN SPECULATE ON JUST HOW BIG THIS CRUSH IS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH) is standing up for himself. What if he can't get away with his little moments of being noticed anymore?
"Excuse me?"
"What are you so scared off?"
"Besides you sneaking in here to peak at my junk?"
So. Typical homophobic remarks to hide that he probably wants Kurt to try to peak at his junk. Fear at being confronted and that his secret is that much closer to coming out (Hah! Get it? Coming out?) is mixed in there too. And I think I may have caught a bit of a stutter on 'sneak'.
"Oh yeah, every straight guy's nightmare, that all us gays are secretly out to molest and convert you. Well guess what hamhock. You're not my type."
Oh Kurt, how wrong you are. He isn't quite as straight as a ruler. As for Karofsky? I imagine that last line stung quite a bit. He is, after all, in ~love with the boy. I mean, look at that face. He flinched at hearing that, yes he did.
"That right?"
At this point he still believes he has a chance of hiding this. At this point he did. At this point I still believed that this was going to end with Kurt bruised and crying and in physical pain.
"Yeah. I don't do the chubby boys who sweat too much and are going to be bald by the time they're 30."
It's one thing to be put down by someone, but by someone you've probably been at least half in love with for a while? Ouchie ouch ouch.
"Don't push me, Hummel."
He may be raising The Fury, but I doubt he was ever planning on really punching Kurt. Threats were there to assert his masculinity to the public, and to stop Kurt from protesting. Would anybody really want to harm that pretty face of Kurt's?
"You gonna hit me? Do it."
I think this is probably part of the reason Karofsky likes him. Kurt is small, he looks like he wouldn't be able to defend himself, and yet he doesn't let the bullying and threats bring him down for too long. He is daring Karofsky to hit him, to back up his threats, and yet he doesn't shrink down. He raises his head, only breaking eye contact to glance at the fist in his face. And they're standing close, face to face, inches between them.
"Don't push me!"
"Hit me because it's not going to change who I am. You can't punch the gay out of me anymore than I can punch the ignoramus out of you."
I couldn't really get it just by pictures, but that locker slam. That locker slam, and that line, he really is begging now for Kurt to just leave, to let him go on living in the world he's created for himself. He really doesn't want to be lectured more, he wasn't going to punch Kurt anyways, he's just wishing the ground would swallow him up so he wouldn't have to confront his feelings.
"Get out of my face!"
"You are nothing but a scared little boy who can't handle how extraordinarily ordinary you are!"
This scene really got so heated. I mean, Kurt is not only tearing that boy a new one, he is literally wagging a finger in front of his face. And Karofsky. Karofsky is so frightened, and angry, and just...human. Whereas before he was simply the annoying bully that we wished would go away, he is now the guy who is scared and ashamed of himself, who has actual feelings and problems. Sure, he's still really dim, but now we see a reason behind his bullying. It may not excuse it, but this IS set in highschool. People do things out of fear, without thinking about the long term consequences. And, in this split second, with Kurt yelling and Karofsky looking ready to cry, I still believed that Kurt was going to end up on the floor, having been beaten up. I was not expecting...
...this kiss. Everybody involved in this show did such a wonderful job of keeping this quiet. I was shocked, my jaw was dropped, my eyes were wide, and I'm pretty sure I all but screamed "WHAT?!!!" I may not actually know much about kissing, but Karofsky was there doing his best to get as much from that kiss as he could. He must have wanted to do that for a long time. And he gripped onto Kurt's head, like he couldn't bear to let him go. (A part of me is happy to point out that when the shot changes from behind Kurt to behind Karofsky, his right hand changed places. I'm curious to know how many takes this took.)
And look at Karofsky's face after that kiss. My heart is beating faster just looking at it, I can only imagine how he must be feeling. And he doesn't let go right away. He slides is hands down Kurt's face, and he looks at him like he's just found something amazing and it's finally there for him, and he can finally let that secret part of him out and be happy. And then he leans in for another kiss. He must have imagined kissing Kurt so many times before, and now he finally has and the real thing is better and he just wants more. His hands left Kurt's head, so I can only imagine that Karofsky moved to wrap his arms around Kurt's waist. His mind is probably flashing with possibilities, and hopes, and then...he's pushed away.

Karofsky has probably just had his first proper kiss, just like Kurt. I'm sympathetic to both of them, I am. On Kurt's side, the guy that has been targeting him specifically has just kissed him. He has stolen his very first kiss that counts, and even if he hadn't, it still would have been surprising and strange and confusing. On Karaofsky's side, he's been suppressing this side of himself for his entire life, and whether he's full out gay or bisexual, he still has a thing for Kurt, and he couldn't act on it until he reached his breaking point. And then when he finally gets a chance to act on it, he's rejected. It isn't surprising, but it still had to hurt.

Dear mods: perhaps you could add an art: picspam tag? There's really no other way to tag this...
