To anybody out there, what is a "folk hero"? When you think of a folk hero, what do you imagine? To me, it seems like a term for people that don't really deserve to be full-on heros, or people that you don't really like, but admire nonetheless. Anybody have any thoughts?

This woman is described as a folk hero in Ian Frazier's book On The Rez.
I think a folk hero is someone who is well known within a community, but not famous enough to be inaccessible. Like, you might actually imagine doing some of the cool things they've done. In On The Rez, SuAnn has her shit WAY more together than most of the people on the Rez and is just a very wise, kind, brave kid.
You know all those stickers that say "Free Leonard Peltier"? He is a folk hero. I don't exactly know why he's in jail or why anyone wants him out...
Personally, I don't have any "heroes" and I find the whole concept kind of weird and a little gross, to idolize someone so completely that you want to be just like them.
