I think the only really Japanese movies I've ever seen were animated films. Most of the time these leave me with my head tilted slightly to one side like the RCA dog, going "huh?" I think this is largely because I'm not Japanese--I suspect there's a lot of cultural undertones going on that I simply miss because I don't have the background.

F'rinstance I just saw Escaflowne last night, and was left vaguely puzzled. But that also might have been because they changed so much in the transition; the books made a lot more sense to me. Although Von was a lot more of a dick in the books. But now I'm rambling.

Well, for all intensive purposes, this is another animated film - the CG isn't hyper-realistic like it was for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The characters here have smooth skin instead of textured skin and there are a few more animation flaws and cut corners. I think it's a combination of both conscious choice and production costs. The "smooth look" makes it feel a little more of a cartoon and all.

It is rather different, stylistically, but even by Japanese movies the action and plot layout is pretty ridiculous.

Not yet. It's one of those movies where I'm not too entirely eager to see but I'll watch it. The one thing keeping me even remotely interested in it is Yuffie.

Yuffie like, actually gets screen time. Unlike Aeris. I was an Aeris fanboy. Aeris gets like, 10 seconds of time.

I'm watching it right now, and most all of the music is from the game. Sure, it's been turned into heavy metal for the most part, but so far I've picked out several themes that come directly from the game, just remixed. ;)

Yeah, it's all from the game, but... none of it is like... really any good. I don't know if it was a consequence of the rip, but the soundtrack volume was really quiet for the most part. During the action sequences it should have been a bit louder than it was.
