Making less than you're spending sucks. Kind of a constant, low-level stress that keeps you always checking prices. We've so been there.

What's your field? Maybe you can pick up a little extra on the side programming scripts. Heck, I've got a couple I'd pay someone to write for me--hate to bother the spousal unit when he's already working twelve-hour days doing it for a living.

I am in software engineering. I do know how to program but I don't know if I can commit myself to being an on-the-side developer when I'm already loaded with stuff to do as it is. That's the little problem with that. The on-the-side job also has the added problem of not feeling like a real job, and more like a favour to a friend.

But it's mostly the time issue. If I work hard, then I should be able to tell myself that I can finish most of my research work in a few years, get out a lot of published papers, and then be assured that I can pick up scholarship money, and in the future, get a good position as a postdoc or a researcher or a professor.
