So in this class filled with Reading Specialists and English teachers and others, nobody actually reads kid books.

Seriously??? That's like saying you're a reading specialist or English teacher but have never read Pride and Prejudice or The Odyssey. I admit I've yet to read Percy Jackson or Sideways Stories (well, I think I read one of those yeaaarrs ago), but not only have Harry Potter and the Bartimaeus Trilogy had a big impact on kids' lit, they have a lot of material that adults can mine out of it too (esp. Bartimaeus).
