[ Neil realized that not standing out would be about as much work as doing so on purpose -- and the odds of someone really recognizing him enough to make a big stink (hah!) about him being here were fairly low. Besides, he isn't too good at this espionage business, despite what people might assume.

Fortunately for Neil, he wasn't the only wallflower around, so it meant that he wouldn't stand out nearly as much as he would trying to mingle.

When the timing was better, he approached Kiyoha from the side, dressed in his not-too-festive green kimono, and with his hair styled down over the fabric of the eyepatch as best he was able to manage. ] I didn't expect the platforms... [ With a look downward, and then slightly up at her. ] Does it make it easier to spot people you know across the room?

[Kiyoha smiled right away as he approached, bowing her head]

Ah, it certainly does, though that was not the intention. These okobo are generally used for the oiran's promenade, but they don't have such a thing here. I must admit, I'm glad, since it's a troublesome affair to have to have a group of men, kamuro and all of this to-do just for the occasion of me leaving the household. This will be the last time I wear such high okobo.

[And to show just how much ceremony it was, she takes a step closer, with the elaborate step of the oiran]

Very troublesome indeed. Though speaking of trouble, I trust no one has given you any?

[ Such a stark contrasts to other practices she's spoken of before, which he doesn't bother repeating. He steps aside a bit, watching the sway of her heavy-seeming feet before each step was taken. A short laugh. ] Sort of reminds me of platform shoes, only without the accompanying disco music.

[ ...hey, some things never die, okay? ]

[ At that, he looks back up to her, shaking his head lightly. ] No one seems to be paying me much mind at all. [ Smiling. ] I guess I don't stand out enough, which I should be thankful for.

[She accepts the reference to something she's not familiar with smiling. Kiyoha's getting used to this! Plus, it doesn't seem terribly important.]

Very much so. But luckily okaa-san himself is getting quite drunk, so he likely wouldn't be able to tell you from his own brother, if he had to.

[ He laughs a bit. ] Should I go try getting on his good side? I might have more luck than with Sir Ono, if what you say is true...

It may work well enough! Who knows, perhaps your kindness could end the silly rivalry we seem to have with Hachisu. Or at the very least, he may not care if you come to call.

[ Neil grins and squares his shoulders. ] So you fancy me a diplomat, eh?

Heh, well, if that's the case, I think I might just have to at least introduce myself and pour him a round...

Oh, as far as I have known you, I think you would make a fine diplomat, Lockon-san. You have a talent of speaking well and relating well.

[ That's what being the most "normal" Meister gets you -- a knack for wanting to get to know anyone and everyone, so you can wrap yourself in the illusion that the world is worth saving, even just a little bit.

...whoa, no time to think about that.

At her words, he reaches up to rub at the side of his neck, glancing away. ] Oy, you're too kind, Kiyoha. Really.

Am I? I just thought I was stating something obvious.

[but she smiles and turns slightly to glance at the rest of the party] I am glad to see so many people, though. I would even guess there are more people here than there were watching my first promenade.

[ He just gives her a hum to the affirmative, not really wanting to argue her point.

A blink, and then he turns when she does. ] It's a big deal, so I'm not surprised. I wonder how many are genuinely excited, and how many are just looking for an excuse to party.

I would say more are looking for an excuse to party, but that is to be expected. After all, we are in the entertaining business, yet we rarely get to indulge in it ourselves. It's a bit ironic.

That doesn't seem fair. "All work, no play" and all that.

[she smiles] I'm sure you've noticed, but little is fair in the floating world.

[ He sighs, despite the easygoing smile on his face. ] I guess that's true. What can we do about it, is the real question...

But I don't want to ruin the mood with the topic, tonight. [ A chuckle. ] It seems I'm always going against the norm. [ Force of habit? ]
