quick question for my jewish friends

Jun 05, 2010 15:54

Michaels writing partners mom just passed away. They invited us over to their place as I believe they sit shiva for 1 week now. My question: what do we bring? I heard we are supposed to bring food? Flowers? Can I bring cake or does it have to be food items. Thanks so much!!!

I would bring something like a fruit salad in case any of them keep kosher - unless you have a kosher bakery where you cam get a kosher cake/dessert, kwim? Flowers would be fine too :)

I agree, fruit is a good choice. Another option is munchie-type food like mixed nuts or dried fruit. Personally, having just been through this with Kevin's grandfather, I wouldn't do flowers...my MIL isn't even that religious and she didn't want any flowers in her house when we were sitting shiva. Food is always safer when it comes to Jews ;)

Yeah, definitely no flowers at a shiva! But food is always welcome.

Thanks, I'll stick with food items. Hope to get a nice fruit salad. Not sure if they keep kosher so I should stay away from baked goods/ cakes right?

I'm sure food or flowers would be appreciated, but I think people usually bring food...cake would be fine.

I actually think cake is fine. The food is usually put out for guests so unless you have some reason to believe that they are strictly kosher it's fine.
