First Kiss
They sat together on Colonial One.
“How are you feeling?” He could see she was exhausted and in pain.
Some days were better than others.
“Well, I could sleep for about a year, but you, however, do not have that luxury because you have a new job.” She forced a slight smile. “Billy?”
“It took a little while to find that jeweler.” He handed her a small black velvet box.
“Thank you.”
Bill eyed her suspiciously.
“Rumor has it that I know very little about military protocol, but I do believe that someone who commands more than one ship is called an admiral.” She held the box out to him.
He hesitated, took the box from her, and opened it.
Inside-a set of gold rank insignia pins.
He had no words.
“Congratulations, Admiral Adama.”
“Thank you, Madame President.”
It was all he could manage.
He looked to Billy. “Thank you, Billy.”
Billy nodded.
His attention returned to Laura. “I never gave up hope. I just stopped trying to get these a long time ago.”
“Just goes to show ya, Bill, never give up hope.”
With those words, suddenly he was twelve again…
They sat together in the library.
“The most important thing to remember in any endeavor, Billy, are the rules of engagement.”
Only his grandparents Adama called him Billy.
He listened intently to his grandfather, hanging on his every word. William Joseph Adama was the wisest man he knew.
“If you’re sweet on a girl, you woo her. With flowers. With candy. With words. And you ask permission before you kiss her. Let her make the decision. If she balks, never give up hope.”
“Yes, Sir, never give up hope,” he repeated.
“Remember, there are three kinds of girls-those who are beautiful, those who are smart, and those who are beautiful and smart. It’s a rare thing to find the one who is both, like your grandmother. Usually they don’t know they are. If ever you do, son, hold on tight. No matter how much she might squirm, hold on tight. She’ll be the one worth loving beyond all reason…”
Bill smiled. “Same goes for you, Laura.”
“Hmm. All right.” She moved to stand.
He took her hand, gripped her arm, helped her up, steadied her on her feet.
She looked at him, grateful for his support.
He couldn’t take his eyes off her. Suddenly he felt as if he’d just taken the smartest, most beautiful girl in the entire school to the prom and this was his goodnight.
No flowers.
No candy.
No words.
Gently, he took her chin in his hand and turned her face toward him. Their eyes met and they traded tentative smiles. Then without asking for permission, he kissed her softly.
He’d waited long enough.
Their lips parted, but the moment lingered between them. With eyes closed, each smiled at private thoughts. When their eyes met again, they smiled at each other.
Then Billy was at her side. Taking his arm, she let go of Bill’s.
With tears in his eyes, he watched her leave.
She had no idea.
Beautiful.
Smart.
Beyond all reason.
Billy Adama had finally found her.
