Along Came a Spider
He was brushing his teeth when he heard her scream.
Spit and run.
"Laura, are you all right?”
She was on the floor, tangled in the bed sheet.
“It’s a spider!”
He followed her point.
“A daddy long legs! Kill it!”
“This little thing?” He laughed. “This is not a spider.”
“Yes it is! Kill it!”
“No, it’s not. Calm down. Yes, it has eight legs and tends to skitter about the way spiders do, but that is a harvestman.
“What?”
“A daddy long legs is also known as a harvestman. It does belong to the class of arachnids, but it’s not a spider. Spiders have a distinct waist. The head, thorax and abdomen on a harvestman are fused. Spiders have eight eyes. This little guy only has two. Spiders produce silk, venom, and spin webs. Harvestmen do not.”
“And you know so much about these vile creatures because?”
“I had two boys. They had bug boxes.”
“Well, that harvestman bit me. Kill it.”
“They don’t have fangs.”
She snorted. “You see this mark?”
He followed her point.
Inside upper thigh. Very nice.
“This is a medically significant bite. And if it’s not from him, then it’s from…”
Bill smiled.
