Me likey. As sad as this is, I always liked the Luka/Abby ship. Somehow, the whole thing with her and Carter seemed...just...wrong and forced from the beginning. But I also have gotten the impression that in some ways Abby can't give completely...you even see it with this baby thing. I like your little drabble...captures her character in a nutshell.
Thank you for saying I got her character. I think Abby, like Cameron is complex and flawed and gets a lot of bashing from fandom but I admire her caring and her continuing to try.
I always liked the Luka/Abby ship too, it seemed like they were two people who very much cared about each other but their own demons got in the way. I thought Carter never really understood Abby as she was, his idealization of her got in the way of seeing clearly and Abby. I think the new showrunner this year, David Zabel, is doing a great job of exploring their relationship and keeping them in character while making it almost suspenseful to see what happens next and when they will figure it all out. And in a minimum amount of time -- in the Christmas episode they had less than 5 minutes of screen time in total. I wish David Shore were taking notes.

ITA Abby is a bit more of a grittier character than Cameron (louse of an ex, smoking, drinking, string of dysfunctional r'ships), but the essence is still there. I always get the sense that even in the midst of the chaos, when all the other doctors are trying to rush the patients out and forget about them, Abby has had some really amazing connections on a human level. Her recent interaction with the woman who had a double BRCA1 mutation and wanted a double mastectomy was one of the quieter, more beautiful storylines of the past several seasons

Carter was one of my favourite characters in the beginning but he never grew up. And tptb never let him grow up, he would have episodes where I was sure he would but then he sank back into the ingenue again. By season 7 it was no longer charming, just pissy. I think part of the problem was NW himself, he didn't want to do the addiction/recovery storyline properly so Carter did a few crossword puzzles at AA meetings and was cured (unlike MT who insisted that if Abby was going to= relapse it had to be done realistically and so we got two painful seasons of Abby drinking and denying), and then he wanted really long vacations which meant that they couldn't integrate Carter into the other storylines properly

I don't watch E.R., but I don't need to in order to know that this is very well-written. You've got talent.;-)
Anyway, my purpose for coming to your private journal (I really hope this is okay) is that I wanted to make sure that I didn't upset you with my "feeling old at 28" comment. Moreover, if I had, I didn't want to carry it on in house_cameron. I couldn't quite tell from your responding comment whether you were irked or not, and I wanted to apologize if you were. It's odd to be in my late 20s when it seems that just yesterday I was still in high school. Anyway, my apologies if my comment irked you and I guess I'll see you over at house_cameron.;-)
Thank you but you are a much better writer than I am.
No, I wasn't offended at all. I remember that at 21 I thought I was so old, and at 34 I was just a baby. My mother-in-law when she was in her sixties was convinced she was 22 but for the physical pains of her body.
Besides, being in school (especially grad/professional school where they treat you like you're 12) is a cocooning thing so you're really only 18 after all. :)

Aww, thank you for the compliment. With that said, you're selling yourself much too short. You've got talent.;-)

It's funny (and amazing) how that happens. My 86-year old grandmother is pretty much the same way. She had a stroke in June (she's fine now), but refused to allow the nurses to treat her like an invalid. Within two days, she was walking around the hospital room and demanding to go home. You really are just as old as you think you are.

hahaha! Too true. In fact, my fellow students and I are convinced we're in high school. The day we started, they took our pictures for a class photo and gave us each a locker.;-)
I couldn't believe it when Ames made Luka put his hand in that vise! OMG I thought I would die. I wonder what that will do to his career now? Abby looked like she was gonna lose it when she heard the gunshots. I love those two together. I hope it lasts.

It took 6 years for Abby and Luka to work things out in the end.I'm glad the payoff is so great now.
Thanks for the compliment.
