earn flying miles? I never done that so I'm not sure how do you "earn" them? Is it a Credit card thing or something else?

Thank you in advance for the help.

Depends on the airline. Typically, though, you sign up for the frequent flyer program and receive miles for the miles that you fly with the airline or affiliated airline.

They will often also have credit card deals where you can make purchases on a special card that will also transfer into frequent flyer miles.

Typically you'll earn more via flying than by purchasing.

Every airline has their own frequent flyer program where you earn miles, but some of them are part of the same network so you don't have to join 10+ different programs. For instance, I'm a member of the United Airlines frequent flyer program ("Mileage Plus") but if I want to fly on U.S. Airways, I don't have to join their frequent flyer program because they're in the same "network" ("Star Alliance") as United Airlines. All I have to do is provide my United number when I book on U.S. Airways and I'll still earn miles.

You traditionally earn miles when you fly, but the airlines often try to get you to sign up for one of their credit cards by offering a bonus lump sum of frequent flyer miles when you get approved. The credit cards usually have an annual fee attached, but sometimes are waived for the first year.
