Baseball!

So, one of the things in Mariners fandom is that the front office is so good at keeping secrets that you generally don't hear about trades until they happen AND, if you hear about something, there's a good chance it's really going to happen. The Pineda/Montero trade is an awesome example of it as very little time passed from the first hint until ( Read more... )

baseball is awesome, baseball is heartbreaking, magical mariners, jesus montero is a mariner, michael pineda, baseball

...Okay, that's fast. THIS IS A COOL POST. (All your posts are, but this is EXTRA-SPECIAL, because I was offline when this was happening and so missed it all :D)

Oh, and I think it's taking so long because it's pending a physical, and all four of them are out of the US right now.

Hee, glad you enjoyed! (These are the events that make me feel like I can't ever leave my computer, haha.)

Yeah, that's what I've heard! I'm sure it'll be fine, but I do hope they manage to get it done officially soon.

This is a really cool post! I love it when you talk about the baseball/Mariners fandom because I think people generally don't think of things like sports or other mainstream interests as fandoms but they really are!

THEY ARE. Lately, I've been having this thing where I'm like, "I want to write an essay about that!" and this is definitely something that fits in that category. Especially since the specific area of baseball fandom I lurk in is something of a subset of the more "accepted" sports fandom, so I think there are similar dynamics at work (people who watch tv vs. WATCH TV). And I'm not sure there's much actual participation in other kinds of fandom, but it's not at all unusual to see a Arrested Development or Game of Thrones reference. The other day, Brandon Sanderson, an author I came I love, came up, so that was so cool ( ... )

I guess what's neat to think about is how at the fundamentals, whenever a group of people get together to discuss a shared like that is what fandom is, whether it's tv, sports, knitting, WHATEVER. And that's not something we really think about too much, but it's kind of true.

That's a funny point about sports fans not trying to control the outcome of things. I really do hate the entitlement tv fandom seems to feel, where it's like guys we don't own these things. as much as we love them, we don't own them. They're not our stories, we're just listening to someone else.

Yeah, it's something I like to think about. I think that might be part of tv fan's entitlement, too, that we think we're different, but it's not really! We just maybe have to look a little harder find people "like us."

YEP. And I will certainly rage and rage and be SURE that tv writers are making the ABSOLUTE WRONG CHOICE, buuuuut I don't think they need to listen to me.

Oh, here's something sports and tv fans DO have in common: You know that idea that tv shows are "out to get you"? Doing certain things to annoy shippers or whatever? Sports fans totally have that, thinking that sports teams don't want to win or only care about making money or that kind of thing!
