Things that fascinate me...

This is a broad list of, well, things that fascinate me. Things I can't understand, things I'd love to experience (I hope you're all mature enough to realize that #4 falls under that first part, and not here, lol), and things I enjoy reading about. In a pseudo-order ( Read more... )

Regarding 1, 2, and 5, I recommend trying to track down the documentary Snowshoes and Solitude. It's a film that Survivorman Les Stroud and his wife made about spending a year alone in the Canadian wilderness with minimal supplies, as their honeymoon. (I haven't seen it. I just remember it exists.)

Also if you haven't seen every episode of Survivorman, you certainly should.

Thanks for the rec! I tried to track down that doc on Blockbuster Online, but alas, no luck.

I think I saw an ep or two of Survivorman when I had cable, but the show that really gripped me was "Tougher in Alaska" (or I think that was the name), hosted by one of those dudes with the crazy names. He did a whole ep on what it's like to be a police officer in the extreme outlying areas, and it was really interesting.

1) The hardships of living in Alaska, and other similarly harsh climates

You've been watching too much Discover Channel lately, haven't you?

No cable, actually! But I read a book a few yrs back (Drop City, by TC Boyle) about hippies who moved to Alaska to try to make a life up there, and it was so fascinating that ever since I've sought out information on that part of the country, and what it takes to live up there. (I worked with an editor who was born in Alaska, and she said she'd walk to the school bus and on the way her eyelashes would freeze together. Holy cow!)

i wish you'd categorize these for people like me who would confuse which statement belongs in which subset of fascination. :)

a sewing blog i occasionally read is written by a woman who lives in alaska. it doesn't really seem all too terrible, other than it's cold 99% of the year. but she makes tank tops and shorts for the 1% when it's 'warm' enough for them. it's sometimes interesting.

but i know what you mean. with the exception of #2, i can't understand these things either.

people who love you don't ignore, doubt, or falsely accuse you. i'm one of them. you have lots. :)

I really enjoyed reading the Yarn Harlot's blog a year or two ago, when she stayed in a remote cabin for a week to get away from it all. It ended up snowing like 8 feet, and it took her a few hours to unload the car because the road was snowed in. Then it took her a whole day to walk into town for supplies... it was both tiring and fascinating to read :)
