I know this is cheesy, but...

I think it's time for one of those safety reminders. And I don't mean the email chain your mom forwarded you about locking your doors when leaving Walmart, I mean a real honest safety reminder.

This story has me freaking out a lot, both because this girl looked like someone I know, and because of the random brutality of the crime. It literally ( Read more... )

Oh i've been following that story too. Glad the guy is finally in custody. And yeah, I know it is random and we have a greater chance of being in a car accident, but it is still terrifying right?! Poor girl.

Good point! I feel like we, as a culture, obsess over minor safety details (don't eat raw eggs!) but we're emailing people on our iphones while driving on the freeway. One of the most dangerous things we do, and most people don't pay enough attention to it.

I think they totally have classes at the ywca in G-Dale...also you should be sure to carry mace if you don't already.

I keep mace in my car, but not on me. Do they make small keychain sized ones for your purse? I need to look into that.

They totally do. Check out an army/navy supply store.

Also, the other tip I always heard is that whenever you are heading to your car or your door, always get your keys out and ready first so you're not standing there digging around and waiting for someone to attack you.

Oh man, this story makes me so mad. I've seen Lily before - her high school is about two blocks from where I live and I usually pass groups of kids when I'm out for a walk.

I've taken a couple defense classes but even if you don't do that, the simple things can be really effective too. If someone's following you, pick up your phone, mute the ring and pretend to be talking to a boyfriend or father and mention to the imaginary person where you are, what you're doing, that you will be home in a minute. And don't be afraid to duck into a store or something and ask if you can wait there for someone to go away - you have to trust your gut feeling. Much better to feel silly than the alternative :/

There's an army navy sort of supply store on Colorado at Glendale - they might have keychain mace. If they do please let me know since I'd love to buy one too.
