Aw, as soon as I saw the subject line, I knew how this post would end. Still 16 years is a good lifespan for a dog and it sounds like he generally had a pretty good life. Putting two of our dogs to sleep (both at age 12) was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I hope all is well with your family and I hope they know they did the right thing for him. And hugs to you, too.

It always feels like a betrayal when you take them for that last car ride but I guess its an unspoken pact when you first let them into your lives that at some point you have to help them leave with grace. You know your doing the right thing but it still hurts.
It took me over a year to not cry every time I thought of Digger after he was gone. So go ahead and cry if you need to. There's no shame in that. *hug*
