In praise of the somewhat good humble text editor

Most of you won't care about this, but if you need to edit some messy data in text format or look closely at some long, tangled lines of code, Ian Mead's UltraEdit is the best. It's been a while since I've had to use it, but it's still the best.

And now, back to that messy data.

Nope. I'm wrong. It's not the best. It screwed around with my data under the apparent assumption that it included line numbers that I don't really need to see. After I swore a fair amount, I discovered that if I open up the file using the Quick Open command rather than the ordinary Open command, the data shows up in the form that I expect, but I'm no longer as enthusiastic a fan of this editor as I was only a few hours ago, and I probably won't go beyond the trial version.

I got so used to our default text editor at work that it was hard for me to migrate to 'popular' word processors. I still have some early writing saved from that program. Huh, I ought to dig out those old floppies and transfer them to a usb. O.o
