I have a Compudaypak backpack. It's meant to hold a laptop too (and I do put mine in there), but you could also put maps or other flat-ish things in there, plus stuff the medium pocket with a jacket, etc... your camera gear goes in the bottom and can be accessed without disrupting anything else. I used it on my trip and it was great the whole time! Very sturdy and comfortable. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a hip belt, but I could have put one on myself if I really wanted that. I paid about $50 (30 pounds?) for it on Ebay (lightly used).

I covet a shootsac, but they're expensive unless you can find them on e-bay. Really simple, but so pretty!

They are pretty, but I'm specifically looking to avoid one shoulder ones because they give me back ache. Also looking for something a little less pricey ;)

I can see that. I just want one for the days when I'm not carrying around a bunch o' stuff.

my friend has a backpack that is AWESOME, but I think he said he spent $350 on it....not so cheap...

LowePro actually makes ones like you describe w/ the space for a lunch/windbreaker/etc. Check out their full line up.

Thanks, I had a look on their website and the fastpack looks good. They are quite expensive though so I'll look out for bargains on ebay :)
