why is it - that I can be so close to finding what I want (and yet so far away) and for once in a great while, he's actually interested and willing and cute and funny and adorable and intelligent and makes me feel like a princess and i have to go and fuck it all up (metaphorically of course)....and i think he understands and maybe he doesn't at all

it's probably because that's the way life works...you inevitably end up doing the very things you said you'd never do and the same is true when you've been saying for years that you can't believe OTHER people would ever do such things. Sometimes you just have to eat your own words...
