things, and, well, things
There was a leak. Inside. Know how crappy it is when your fridge leaks *inside*? everything gets wet and terribly annoying. I turned, as you do, to the internets, and the internets provided descriptions of what was likely wrong and even handy youtube vids showing someone else doing the repair that needed to be done. With some help from the housemate, who figured out how to unscrew the screws keeping us away from the important parts, I got to defrost the bottom of my freezer and the frozen drainage line, and we now have non dripping fridge!
I know, it's just a little thing, but it's pretty exciting to have at least fixed that without having to resort to a million dollar payment of some kind. Or without having to fork over more money for a new fridge.
Went to a new vet last week! The old one had started to bug me, since pretty much every time I walked in the door with the dog I could be guaranteed to walk out with at least $200 less. And I felt somehow as if the Vet was consistently not listening to me.
So, checked out a new Vet that's close - even their new pet questionnaire was sweet! And the Vet actually sat on the floor *with* the dog the entire visit, talking with me about her history and about what's going on with her poop. And her thought is basically that with all the stress of last year I've basically helped my dog get irritable bowel syndrome. So, dog is now on a chinese herb for calm, AND gets calming chews. The Vet also wants me to consider cooking all of Domino's food. Which, ok, I'm considering, but I'm not gonna do. Because seriously? SERIOUSLY? No, i mean, I love her, but I can only deal with so much. And the diet the Vet wants me to consider is this thing where you buy prepackaged meat, throw it into a crock pot with qunioa and vegitables, and that's dog food for the week: this would be better nutrition than i get and take more effort and be more expensive.
Since we saw the Vet the dog hasn't had intestinal problems, though, so hopefully she'll get through a week without them and I can maybe, maybe, maybe consider the chinese herbs + calming chews a solution.
I'm so ready for a solution.
If not, the good part about the new vet is that I feel like I can go back to her and tell her that it didn't work and not have her prescribe another huge series of tests. She did mention we could go to steroids (which is basically what I used to give my cats for their intestinal problems), though she said it wasn't as effective on dogs as it is for cats.
so far she had a bad morning, but was feeling well enough to eat later in the day, so I'm hopeful!
I follow Jim Hines not because I love his books, but because I love his blog posts - he truly is trying, and I like the way he makes jokes but is not an asshole. So, he wrote this whole "fisk"? (which i don't understand - is that like sporking? i could access urban dictionary but i'm too lazy) of a cranky old SF author's ranting about a young author's proposal that she's going to have a column on non-binary gender SF at Tor.com.
And if you made it through that sentence, go check out the article. The comments are really uneven (like there are some people who seriously do not understand biology, much less what the word gender means), so fair warning.

Author Alex Dally MacFarlane wrote an article called Post-Binary Gender in SF: An Introduction over at Tor.com, calling for “an end to the default of binary gender in science fiction stories.”
(i won't link to the other guy, because, well, it's way more fun to read Jim Hines quoting him.)
OH, and here's Alex MacFarlane's rant after she read the comments at Jim Hines' blog, which I love.
school is busy and i need to write funding proposals for summer, a presentation draft to send to a professor tomorrow, and i'm going to drive to riverside, sadly, for a local conference tomorrow. the fun never ends. at least the housemate and i made each other dinner this week! (mine was artichoke lemon chicken, and hers was shrimp scampi)
