One of the most interesting words I have ever come across here on LJ. I had never read it before and I don't think I've seen it outside LJ (or other similar social networking sites). Your options make it even more difficult for me since I don't know if I should read them in English or German or with an Australian accent. In short, important or not, I'm afraid I'm unable to fill out the poll. :)
I've started to notice it elsewhere on the internet, but I definitely first came across it on LJ. As for your options quandary, I guess I'd just like to know how you pronounce it in your head, so in German, I guess. (Is their a German word equivalent/translation that is different?)
What makes it difficult for me is that in English 'e' is very often pronounced the same way as a German 'i'. Usually it's not a problem but once you start consciously thinking about pronounciation it starts to get messy. :) But before it gets too complicated, I think I made up my mind and take the first choice.
Considering the idea was created to be analogous to the theory of biological evolution based on genes, I figured it should be pronounced like "gene". I honestly didn't know that people pronounced it in different ways.
Yeah, I didn't know either, until I was talking to a student of mine (she also has an LJ, I believe), and she pronounces it "mehmee". And friends of hers pronounce it in different ways, too... So, yeah. I saw emotivating's subject title and it got me thinking. And I hadn't done a poll in yonks, so I thought, why not? : )
Why thankee! Check out the list of icons off my userinfo page; where I know the maker I've credited them. The really old ones don't have credits because I saved them without noting the name and it's too hard to work out (although there is that whomadethisicon community). Otherwise, check out the "iconage" link in my sidebar; it is the friends filter for a lot of the icon makers I've taken icons from.
(This would absolutely be the appropriate moment for me to use that "I judge you by your userpics" icon I saw someplace but didn't fucking save...)
I assumed (and giggled at the fact) that it was pronounced "meemee" as in "me! me!", as it seemed to be the label for any self-revelatory quiz or generator.
The name, as it exists in my head, suits the subject perfectly and sums up the blogging generation. It's all about mememememememememe!
hehe i read "reasoning rocks" and in my head it sounded like scooby doo saying "seasoning socks". then i imagined shaggy seasoning his old socks to eat cos it was all they had left and they were holed up in a bunker by a g-g-g-ghhhhost!
i pronounce it mehm also, but i think this is more because i am a student of french, and there is the word même which means "the same" or "even" (no the opposite of odd meaning of even) but then i say a lot of stuff wrong accoridng to people, and i think hearth is a fun word, and i can never decide which i right. is it based off of earth, heart or ear. all have the key ear but they all sound so different.
