What is it about this year and the grieving issues for me? They are worse than last year. I had a mini-breakdown in church last night. During rehearsal, I was up there singing with the group, "Open the eyes of my heart, Lord..." and I just started crying. One of the most amazing things I have learned over the last two years, is that when a troubled person, (in your case, this child) lashes out at you, he is not lashing out at you. He is lashing out because he feels safe enough to emote. Repeat as often as necessary, "It's not me. Whatever his issues are, it's not me."

Don't let one kid who has more to bear than he needs to at this point in his life change how you feel about teaching. You may be the only one who is holding him to the expectation of success. He needs that.

oh, and regarding kids like him and some of the others in your night school- remember, they are there because regular school didn't work for them.
I had this epiphany when I was teaching a college prep reading class, and I couldn't understand why the class wasn't getting what I found so easy.... it wasn't easy for them, it was hard.. that's why they were there.
