"Do you meet the criteria for a long and happy marriage?"

This was a teaser for an upcoming report on the 5 o'clock news. I almost had this urge to watch it, like I wanted to immediately turn indian-style and get a paper and pencil ready.  Ooooh, boy! They will tell me what I can do to be a good wife! They will tell me if I have what it takes!!

I used to think that a relationship that had any substance, and could go the distance should be hard work. That one would constantly have to reach a middle ground- something, someone, would always have to give up some vital part of themselves in order to make the relationship "work."

I don't think that now. I think the work is done inside the individual. We need to be comfortable in our own skin, with who we are, and how we are progressing on our individual journey before we can take another's hand. I also think that the secret to a long and happy marriage is to keep your eyes on your loved one. Don't let the eyes wander. Ever. The loved one has to be the most important person, always.

That's just my thoughts when I caught a second glance at the line "Do people really need to be coached on how to get along with someone for the rest of their lives?"
