on the road- jack kerouac.
it sounds all too classic to recommend this to teenagers but it IS really really good- you'd like it .. its about just getting away.
alright and
the adventures of huckleberry finn! I'm reading it now-- the best !
The Color Purple by alice walker
Balzac and the little chinese seamstress- dai sijie... so good and short!
Fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe!
and um,
fool in love, by steven ivory- collection of short stories.
.... just a few i thought were really good ... :-)

i think i will add -
me talk pretty one day by david sedaris. (hilarious, sad, and completely satisfying)
grapes of wrath. classic
mostly anything by salman rushdie. especially the moor's last sigh (i think he wrote this while he was in exile)
