This was inspired by Miss Liz who posted what she was reading. So, I thought i would take some time to show off my skills. These have all been read since the end of January:
1) Eight Men by Richard Wright. Harlem Renaissance writer who also wrote the famous novel Native Son
2) The Street by Ann Petry- A not often noted write of the H.R period. Mixed urban realism and naturalism with a critique of gender and race
3) Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. A classic epic in its time. A harsh indictment of radicals, communists, racist America. Follows the "jazz text" tradition- meaning that its structure is highly improvisational.
4) The Prince by Niccilo Machiavelli. One of the most influential and controversial books in political theory. Great way to learn about what political realism is all about.
5) The Discourses by Niccilo Machiavelli. Machiavelli's book for the classical civic republican.
6) Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley. Another wonderful classic that helps all readers get to understand one of the most misunderstood characters in American History.
7) On the Origin of Inequality by Jean Jacques Rousseau. The last civic classical republican shares his views on how man came up with the idea of inequality. Zerzan is a plagiarizer.
8) On the Social Contract by Jean Jacques Rousseau. This book lays out the social contract theory. Meaning that societies are governed only by those who give their consent. Therefore, we have the right to withdraw that consent when government does not meet our needs
9) Reflections on the French Revolution by Edmund Burke. If you would like a better look into Burkeian politics in modern form- visit www.focusonthefamily.org
10) Trapping the Prince: The Politics of Deception- by Mary Dietz. Lays out a thesis of how to reconcile the contradicting texts of Machiavelli.
11) Globalizations and Neoliberalism: The Caribbean Context- Edited by Thomas Klak. 13 theses on the impact of IMF/WB in the Caribbean
12) Contending with Destiny: Globalizations Affects on the Third World- Hall/Benn. Same as above
