Scouting, Scouting, Everywhere!

Last week, Terry officially joined Boy Scout Troop #795.  Woohoo!  Now he is working on achieving his Boy Scout rank, getting to know the other boys in his patrol, and looking forward to camping

Cool! We're in the homestretch of our first year of scouting too! Ryan has been having a lot of fun and just earned his Tiger Badge (basically, I survived the first year) last month. I haven't quite gotten up the courage to go on one of the camping trips for this first year (though MAN the spring trip sounded FUN!), but having gotten through the newbie stage, I'll try to get a camping trip under our belt for this next season. (Heck, I already have a tent that my Mom gave us, needs to be broken in. Right after I learn how to put it up.)

Rachel of course always wants to know why SHE isn't earning badges yet. Since she'll be eligible to be a Daisy in the fall, I suspect we'll soon be a two-scout household...

Wow - Tiger cubs brings back memories!! I'm glad that Ryan enjoyed Tigers, and I hope that he continues to enjoy Cub Scouts. Camping trips are a LOT of work, but they are also a lot of fun. If you get a chance, I suggest picking up a green laser pointer - it works great for pointing out stars and constellations at night.

Let me know if you have any questions about Daisies or Girl Scouts. It's kinda fun to work with Girl Scouting, but it is a LOT of paperwork for the leader and Cookie Mom.

As a GS dad (Brownie troop all about to advance to Jrs), I see our leader with all that paperwork and I'm glad I don't have to do it. I wonder if there's more paperwork for the camping trips I come on? So far, they've stayed in the lodges, which means I sleep in a tent outside. :)

When I was (briefly) a scout (after four years in Cubs & Webelos), my troop did so much camping/canoeing/etc. that one summer that I never picked up my Citizenship skill award, which means--you guessed it--I never even made Tenderfoot! By the end of that summer, I had so many other awards & badges, I think I'd have jumped straight to Star.

We actually have a few cabins set aside for Dads who camp with their daughter's troop. Interestingly, the girls in my Brownie troop do *not* want to sleep in either a lodge or cabins - they want platform tents!!! That means, of course, that I need to do even more training, because in ancient Greek scouting means "training" (probably related to the Latin in that you have to do paperwork to get the training).
