What a powerful man. I mean, yesterday I heard that 300 million people world wide would be watching his memorial service. That just shows us the kind of person he was, and the impact he had on people's lives, especially children. I think his passion for life and the wildlife is something we should all remember and carry with us. Rest in peace Steve.

But you know what Patrick White says about "true blue".... worth remembering... he sees such nationalism ... often being used as a way of abusing those who don't really fit into our society... White was very conscious of this aspect of being an Australian himself...

i did think of that when i put the lyrics in- but I feel its just a part of an Australian identity, much like other cultures have their identity too. Its not discriminating against, or making the Australian culture supreme over another- its capturing the qualities of an individual whom you'd nickname 'true blue'. Mateship is huge in this song, as it plays a big role in the Australian culture. I feel its one thing to be proud of your country, and one thing to discriminate against others. I know im a very proud australian because I think it is a beautiful country, rich in its diversity and is a place that provides many opportunities for all people.

John Williamson has another song called Fair Dinkum, which actually includes other cultures into the notion of being 'fair dinkum'- more or less saying we all live in this fine country for the same reason- because we are given great opportunities etc. We are all equals in our ideals and lifestyle, where background does not come into play.
