yesterday while i was at powell's this woman started talking to me bc we were both looking at the same product. it was one of those virgin-mary-toast makers. she said she had something similar that she got from china. and of course the next logical thing to say after "i got that in china" is "but don't you speak mandarin?" what the hell does ( Read more... )

Well considering that there's some billion Chinese folks in China alone and some of them probably don't even speak Mandarin because of unequal access to education, i think that woman has every right to point out the lack of cultural capital of others without acknowledging (in fact even downplaying) her own.

Exactly. I mean, come on, k@. Even we've taken Mandarin. And by 'we,' I don't necessarily mean me and William. I mostly mean me and that old lady and her husband. Have I told you about my childhoood in San Jose? It was great!

San Jose is totally interesting and very much like Santa Cruz in that they are both Spanish names and people live in both places. Also some rats.
Plus as we all know, you are actually a middle-aged white lady, trickeration, though you mask it with youth and island-person features.

That's like being told by a white classmate in high school that I'm not like the rest of "them" all I could respond with was "umm thanks"
