who currently sets organic standards is it a trade association or is it producer set standards? ie one organic apple maybe more or less organic than another apple grown on another farm?
The Organic Standards Board currently sets standards. There is a trade association, but the Department of Agriculture is trying to seize control and make it so that if there aren't technically organic ingredients "commercially available (read, not cheap enough), then non-organic ingredients could be incorrectly labeled organic. And yes, each farm has different levels of organic, although a product labeled organic likely is somewhat organic.
Thanks for making me aware, this hits close to home because of course Oregon has it's share of truly organic farms, and its share of fake organic farms. I guess one around here a year or two ago was faking the organic thing, they were printing it on their labels but they really weren't. They got in trouble and had to remove their "organic" labeling. If we aren't careful, soon the word organic will be nothing more than a marketing ploy.
You said it better than I could.katherinescottOctober 8 2005, 05:20:52 UTC
That's exactly what they're trying to achieve, making it so they can use pesticides and toxic waste to produce our food and STILL label it organic and have us pay more for it. ARRRGHH!!! I just want a way I can know that me and my children will be halfway healthy and be getting some nutrients and vitamins from our food without being poisoned. I'm worried about the state of our planet, and our food, because I love to eat:)
