He loved her.
The words rang in her ears long after she had left the bedroom, and she pinched herself to make sure that she wasn't sleeping. A red mark burned on her skin when she let go, and she cursed herself for it, internally also making a note to clip her nails soon. She wiggled her toes a bit in her slippers, making sure that she still wasn't dreaming, and made her way into the kitchen.
Two pots sat on the stove, the stainless steel lids momentarily blinding her in the light of the room, before she blinked. A note sat on one of the pots, haphazardly attached with a small piece of Scotch Tape, and she tore it off.
Lise-
I had to run off to the store, I'll be back soon and enjoy the leftover breakfast on the stove.
I love you.

Swallowing, Lisa crumpled the note up and tossed it into the trash, before peeking under the lid of one of the pans. A whiff of burnt toast caught her attention, and she repressed a smile, knowing that Hugh couldn't cook to save his life. Well, at least when it came to toast. She picked the burnt piece of bread up off the plate, cursing herself again as the hot pan left a burn on the tip of her finger, and dropped the toast onto a plate. Picking it apart, she bit into a piece and gasped, not expecting the heat to have been preserved in the bread.
Abandoning the toast, Lisa dug into the fridge, looking for the pesto pasta that she had made the night before. The other pot, which she had discovered contained hot oatmeal, sat besides the burnt toast as she searched for the leftovers.
“Looking for something?” An amused voice startled Lisa and she jumped, slamming the fridge and turning to face the voice. She breathed a sigh of relief, and after digging the leftovers from the back of the fridge, she greeted Hugh with a hug.
“I love you too,” she smiled into his shoulder, her very words sending shivers down her spine. Now, she had no idea where their relationship would go, but wherever it went, she would be ready.
