Summary: No one would ever love her like he did. Not now, not ever.
Rating: K
It had been three months, two weeks, five days, thirteen hours and a handful of minutes since “that day”. She refused to call it by anything else, because in fact, it was the day her life had ended.
Not really, of course, because she was still here to reflect on the events of that day, but it might as well have been the day someone decided to put a bullet through her chest.
He hadn't spoken to her since that day, exactly two weeks after she had broken the news to the public about her departure from the show. There hadn't been one mention of her name to his coworkers, or to his friends; not to anyone. To him, it was almost as if she ceased to exist in his mind. Instead of the beautiful woman he used to spend his time with, she had only become what he allowed everyone else who was important to him to become - a memory.

Lisa Edelstein wouldn't stand for it though, she couldn't let herself loose one of her best friends simply because it was suddenly becoming inconvenient for them to spend time together. After everything they had been through, she wasn't going to let him get away from her. In her eyes, this was the break-up of a relationship that never was. The situation was exactly the same; someone's feelings changed, people got hurt … hell, it was a break-up in its own right. But, in her mind, she wouldn't accept his silent goodbye.
They still loved each other more than anything, and in fact, she hoped that the undefined separation between them would only strengthen their relationship. Through, as she also expected, her way was never the way life went. When they spent their time together, there was never anything serious between them anymore; it was slowly morphing back into what they had before either of them had been willing to admit their feelings for each other. But it was better than what had happened three months, two weeks, five days, twelve hours and fifty-eight minutes ago.
She knew he was emotionally unstable now that their constant visiting had been reduced to a weekend evening once a month, but she never expected herself to be the one caught between him and his instability. She always knew herself to be the only one who could pull him from his dark side; but when she was stuck in her new position on the receiving end of it, she was trapped.

It had been a sunny afternoon, only an hour or so after Hugh had arrived on an early afternoon flight from LAX, and the two of them were curled on the couch in Lisa's apartment, discussing their plans. These quiet, stolen moments before the next day tore them apart, and back to reality, were their escape, their safety, and also the one thing holding them together. That was, until “that day”, when Hugh faced Lisa with his most interesting proposition yet - move in with him in LA and rejoin the House team or continue their life with total denial of their friendship.
“I can't promise you anything Lise, I know why you wanted out, and I know it won't be easy to fix. But I can make something work for you,” Hugh shifted his position on her living room couch to gaze into her eyes, “I miss you Lisa. I miss what we had together before you moved back to New York … and before you decided to leave House.”
Lisa couldn't help but laugh, and she sat up to stare at her friend, or boyfriend, she didn't know what he was to her. “You actually want me to try and rejoin House because you're lonely? Hugh … I chose this … this is something I need for me. It's not that I don't miss working with you, being by your side every day … I miss that more than anything.” She paused to run her fingers along his cheek, “Don't ever think that I'm ignoring you by choosing this, but I need to live my own life. Please, don't ask me to go back on this decision.”
“But I … I need you Lisa, you know I need you more than anything. You're the love of my life … you always have been. I love you Lisa Edelstein, and I always will.”
“I know you do Hugh, and I love you too,” Lisa paused, “But I need this just as much as I need you. And if I choose you … then I won't get to also be happy...” She had no time to finish her retort to Hugh, but by the time she had, the door of the apartment had already shut. And when she let out the breath she had been holding in, his leather coat and keys were gone from the bench by the door.

That had been three months, two weeks, five days, thirteen hours and a handful of minutes ago. By now, Hugh was no more than a fleeting image in Lisa's mind, and when memories of the two of them resurfaced, she managed to drive them from her conscious. But, she knew no matter how hard she tried, her emotions wouldn't change.
And three hours later, a lonely British actor in Los Angeles read an unsigned text from the one number that was etched into his memory, the words on the screen burning into his mind.
“No one will ever love me like you do.”
Then in that moment, he knew he was forgiven.
